It's been five years since Lugus was banished to an island in Scotland for his misdeeds. He is content simply to live day by day waiting for the day that will be his last. He crafts swords to pay for whatever necessities he might need. He lives a simple existence pining away for Moira. When he discovers a Fae on his island, he believes his time is up. When she comes to him asking for help, he discovers he will do anything even risking his own life to help her return home to the realm of the Fae.
Ahryn loves everything about the mortal realm. She was tricked by the Baron Marcus MacGregor and is now trapped as his prisoner. She knows her only way to be free and get home is for Lugus to agree to help her. She is very curious about Lugus and doesn't realize what it means or what it may cost him to help her. Ahryn seeks his help and after Lugus's hears nothing from his brother he agrees to help her return to the realm of the Fae. As their journey away from the isle and Baron MacGregor proceeds, Lugus sees that a Draconian is in the mortal realm, which means there is something very wrong.
Ahryn and Lugus face many enemies on their return home. Ahryn knows there is something from his past that is keeping him from her, but she's not certain what it is. She knows she must get him to return home, its the only way he can face his demons and move on. Upon arriving in the realm of the fae, they are confronted with a plot against King Theron ,his brother, and only Lugus may be able to save him at the expense of his own life. Lugus sets out to save his brother knowing he might not come back to see Ahryn ever again.
Lugus broke my heart in all that he was willing to sacrifice to pay for his sins to ensure anothers happiness. Where was the old confident, sexy arrogant Lugus? Who was this imposter in his place? Ahryn slowly brought Lugus out of his shell, she was the breath of fresh air that he needed. She helped him deal with his past sins and regrets and let his old self reemerge.
Donna Grant has written a dynamic, sensual story of redemption for one man who thought he had lost all only to be shown there was so much more. Lugus made me laugh and cry. You will definately need tissues handy while you read this emotional story. Highland Fires is a story to treasure and read again. I can't wait to see where Donna takes us next with Frang's story.
