It's not easy to pick up the third book of a trilogy and get caught up in the story but with Grant's HIGHLAND DAWN - it was not only easy but it was an energizing stand-alone and completely compelling read from the very first page.
Moira, a Druid priestess and her companion/protector Dartayous are on a quest that began with a prophecy handed down a long time ago, the last lines being:
For the worthy to prevail, the fire
Must stand alone to vanquish the inheritor,
Water must soothe the savage beast, and
The wind must bow before the tree.
A brief prologue told me that Moira had two other sisters and after reading I deduced that each had special powers. Later it would be revealed that Moira's power was the ability to control the wind.
Frang, the Druid who had raised Moira, after her parents had been slain and her other sisters lost, sent Dartayous as her protector on her mission to free the fae from an evil that threatened both fae and human alike. Moira had loved Dartayous from the very beginning, but he shunned away from becoming involved or close to anyone due to a secret he kept. Unfortunately their issues of trust would later endanger their mission as along the journey the evil fae would start to worm his way into Moira's mind in his attempt to conquer the one person who had the ability to stop him. Moira didn't know she held the key to destroy that evil and part of the key was in trusting Dartayous with her own deepest secrets, the only man she would ever love.
The author kept the intrigue, the sensual romance sizzling throughout this action packed adventure right through to the very end. Moira and Dartayous were very engaging leads both highly attracted to one another even though Moira was more honest in her feelings, if not with her trust. Dartayous was an immortal and though he was attracted to Moira more than anyone else in his five hundred years of life, he was resolved to not put her or himself through the pain of watching her age and die while he remained young and alive. There were an abundance of secondary characters all fascinating in their own way that were introduced and reintroduced that will be sending this reviewer back to pick up the first two books in this marvelous adventure. I could be wrong but there still seems to be room for another entry to this series that uncovers the mystery of Frang's secret as I didn't feel that this had been revealed as of yet. Bottom line is that fans of the fantasy and mystical genre should be thrilled with this entry and like myself, if they haven't already read the first two books to this amazing trilogy will be going back for more.
