Born of a goddess and a mortal, Adrian is an Immortal, a warrior created to keep the tenuous balance between good and evil and protecting mankind. Adrian has been tormented by the disappearance of his beloved younger brother. For seven hundred years he has searched in vain for any clue to his whereabouts. One night a demon visits him in a dream and Adrian is led to Seattle and to a woman who will become a vital part of his life.

When talented witch Amber Silverthorne first sees Adrian she is about to be killed by a powerful demon. Attacked while trying to find out who murdered her sister she gets much more than she bargained for.  Adrian rescues Amber and offers to help her if she tells him what she knows in return. Amber isn't sure if she can trust the lethally powerful Adrian but soon she is taking him home.

The Calling was a grippingly fast paced read. It's world is inhabited by magic and preternatural beings, from vampires to were-creatures and demons. The chemistry between Adrian and Amber was electric, their scenes together sparked off the pages. You also meet many remarkably well drawn secondary characters who are pivotal to the story. Such as Amber's best friend Sabina, a werewolf who is fiercely loyal to Amber, and Valerian, a creature of a different sort who is ever there for Adrian in times of need. A seductive vampire named Septimus whose side you're not entirely certain he is on and Adrian's fascinating weapon Ferrin, who can go from the form of a cobra to a powerful sword in the blink of an eye.

Jennifer Ashley did a marvelous job with The Calling. It was filled with tense action and wry humor. I raptly read the book, turning page after page to see what would happen next. A tautly written paranormal that deserves a class of it's own.
